L' ART PAPOU ???

La Nouvelle-Guinée est un pays étrange et mystérieux. Coincée entre l'Australie et les Philippines, sa géographie fut longtemps incertaine. En effet, rares étaient les explorateurs qui osaient s'aventurer dans ces contrées grandes comme la France et l'Allemagne réunies. Montagnes, marécages, grandes plaines côtières, forêts luxuriantes rendaient toute colonisation délicate. Aujourd'hui encore, le réseau routier reste embryonnaire; aucune voie de communication n'est vraiment fiable.

C'est sans doute pour cette raison que les Papous furent l'objet d'incertitudes et d'interrogations.

Cette île détient d'ailleurs le record du monde de langues parlées, soit près de 700. Au sein de cette constellation de tribus et de communautés, deux types de populations sont identifiables: les Papous et les Austronésiens. Arrivés par l'Australie il y a environ 50 000 ans, les Papous s'établissent principalement dans les zones intérieures de l'île. Les Austronésiens s'établissent là vers le Cinquième millénaire avant J.C.

Loin de l'austère beauté des œuvres africaines, l'art papou est un "art" sensuel qui puise sa puissance dans l'étroite symbiose entre la nature et ces peuplades.

The skull of an ancestor was prepared with the jawbone attached and elaborate decorations.
This one has the spiral nose ornament "bipane" , witch, although somewhat resembling boar's tusks and perhaps evoking feeling of a boar's feocity and power, has several connotations.

Currency in the island cultures can take many forms. The traditional currencies, whatever their form, are used in complex and vast economies that are not resticted to the local populations or geographical areas. A currency may be manufactured by one group, sold to a second, and subsequently used in a specific type of transaction with third party.Most of the manufactured currenies are made with materials that are hard to obtain, such as deep-water seashells.
